Operating grants for biomedical research on arthritis

Dear Janet,
This message is to ask for your help, by reopening the regular operating grant program for all biomedical researchers in Canada.
As you are aware, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are currently implementing dramatic changes in their funding structure and process. While these changes will be beneficial to a small portion of fortunate groups, the majority of individual researchers will be at risk of sustaining important gaps in funding while programs are gradually put in place, which may mean the end for some otherwise productive research groups in the country.
The targeted strategic efforts currently in place at the Arthritis Society constitute a valuable asset in a healthy funding environment; however, the current instability resulting from the reforms at CIHR puts so many teams at risk -regardless of the quality of their research- that alternative sources of funding in the coming few years will be crucial for all of us. An open program for biomedical researchers is seen as essential to the community. We respectfully ask the Arthritis Society to consider the operating grant competition as a top priority in its effort to support biomedical research, and to re-implement such an open program as early as possible.
This is the right time for the Arthritis Society to make a real difference for the biomedical researcher community.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Marc Pouliot, Ph.D. Jean Sévigny, Ph.D.
