Petition Against the Changing of CFISD High School Hours of Attendence

This petition is created by students of the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District, and signed by students, teachers, and parents who oppose the shifting of attendance hours to a 9:10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. schedule. We wish to keep the same hours of 7:25 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Below is a list of a few reasons why we do not wish the time to change:

1. High School students need to be home in order to care for younger siblings who are arriving from their elementary or Jr. High Schools.

2. Students who are involved in athletics will most likely have to stay LATE after school for practice. Student who are involved in other extracurricular activities such as band, choir, orchestra and etc. will most likely have to arrive at school early for practice. All of this simply means that many students will have much longer school days. This combined with homework means that students will be staying up later in the night to complete all of their assignments (basically less sleep).

3. By the time that kids (who have to stay after school) are able to leave school, it would be around rush hour time. Not to mention that there will be traffic and that it would take longer to get home, it will also be more dangerous for newer drivers as well.

4. Students would not be able to hold jobs because school hours would interfere with their normal working sessions. Some students need these jobs to pay for higher educations. School hours will also interfere with other students who do volunteer work in the afternoon to evening hours.

5. Sporting events such as football games typically end at around 10 p.m. Pushing the time for school back would mean that events start and end even later.

6. Many kids also have many things they need to tend to in the evenings such as private tutoring, music classes/lessons, orthodontist/dentist appointments and etc.

7. Activities after school would run late into the evening. This would cut into time for studying, family, and relaxation that all young adults need.
