1. Dropping of words Dublin from the crest. As it is already the D in the acronym of UCD, its use is not only superfluous but also patronising to Irish students attending UCD. It also reflects poorly in the eyes of outsiders to UCD as they will see our adoption of such an illogical acronym as UCD, Dublin as a sign of our insecurity with our current image.
2. Reintroduction of our college mottos to the crest. These are AD ASTRA and Cothrom Feinne, which mean To the Stars and Fair Play respectively. Their removal takes away from our unique identity.
3. As the new crest is using a font, called bliss, which has an ongoing license cost, we suggest the college authorities should pick a generic font for its crest. This will mean that using the font will not to add to the costs of running colleges and schools within UCD now and in the future.
If the college authorities believe that these changes are unnecessary then we would like to ask them if our new crest is so perfect, why do we need to bring back our original crest from the turn of the last century for our prestige documents such as degree and diplomas?
