Prohibit price discrimination based on gender

Whereas the Ontario Human Rights Code seeks to eliminate inequalities based on gender and age, which include price differences for men and women as well as other non-monetary privileges exclusively targeting one gender; and
Whereas any instance of price differences are discriminatory regardless of the stated motive, intent or profit margins of the organization as a whole; and
Whereas through active cooperation or not, collusive conditions are in place with such inertia that the market clearly can not by itself drive fair prices; and
Whereas there exist non-trivial cases of discrimination against men and women of significant injustice and exclusionary consequence, like price differences for hair cuts, dry cleaning, clothing, club cover and beverages, dating services, and membership in athletic and recreational associations, practices now illegal in parts of the United States;
Therefore, we the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to support the passing of Bill 182, An Act to prohibit price discrimination on the basis of gender.
We urge the Legislative Assembly to ensure through modification to the Act or other means that the Acts Limitation not be used to allow price differences based on supposed differences in the cost, difficulty or effort indirectly associated with supplying a good or service to the average man or woman based on anecdotal, non-statistical considerations, and that it be based on actual direct cost differences.
We urge that Section 34 of Part IV and section 20.3 of Part II, of the Ontario Human Rights Code be reviewed and modified so as to uphold and not limit the scope of this Act.
