Over the past two months, there have been unprecedented demonstrations in the valley of Kashmir, with hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris taking to the streets, demanding their right to live in peace and seeking freedom.
In response to these protests, the Indian government has flooded Kashmir with over 600,000 Indian soldiers and paramilitaries (translating to approximately one soldier for every eight Kashmiri civilians). It has banned local television channels and placed restrictions on media freedom.
Popular politicians have been arrested without charge and prevented from attending processions and delivering speeches. An indefinite curfew has been imposed across the ten districts of the Kashmir valley with soldiers, in some places, being given shoot-at-sight orders. These measures have led to a shortage of food, medicines and other essential goods.
We, the undersigned, firmly believe in democratic values.
We believe that the Kashmiris' right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly should be safeguarded.
We implore the British Government to take a stand and urge the Indian government to exercise restraint in dealing with protests and ensure that human rights are not violated.
We believe that the Kashmir problem has been overlooked by the world for far too long and urgent action needs to be taken to address the problem.
We ask that the British Government support and help enforce honest and meaningful negotiations to address the underlying causes of unrest in Kashmir, including the fundamental question of Kashmirs future status.
