We are shocked to hear that a Rudd government would keep much of Howards Work Choices legislation, in particular its attack on the right to strike.
The right of workers to strike is an internationally recognized human right. Under the Australian Labor Partys new policy, workers will only be allowed to strike during the bargaining period for a new enterprise agreement. It will be illegal to strike against workplace restructuring, unsafe work practices or victimization.
Even protected industrial action would not be automatic. Workers could wait weeks for a secret ballot to be conducted, giving employers time to stockpile goods or contract out work.
We call on the ALP to:
1. Honour the commitment to tear up Work Choices and abolish AWAs;
2. Restore all workers rights which have been stripped away under Work Choices and the Workplace Relations Act; and,
3. Enshrine the right to strike in ALP industrial relations policy.
We call on the ACTU and State, Territory and regional labour councils to:
Immediately plan a National Day of Protest that demands both the full repeal of Howards anti-worker laws and the implementation by a future ALP government of these three demands.
