The deeds and accomplishments of Admiral Coontz are numerous and immeasurable, and continue to have an impact on the U.S. Navy today.
Admiral Coontz
- was an advocate of women being allowed to serve in the U.S. Navy.
- was an early proponent of the use of air power in the U.S. Navy.
- established a unified fleet.
- strengthened the role of Chief of Naval Operations in the U.S. Navy.
Admiral Coontz served this country with honor and distinction for 43 years, a length of service that is rare in today's military. He sailed in the Great White Fleet, served as this country's second Chief of Naval Operations and returned to sea after serving as CNO.
The U.S. Navy has honored Admiral Coontz twice in the past by naming ships after him: The USS Admiral R.E. Coontz and the USS Coontz. Given the accomplishments of Admiral Coontz and his impact on U.S. Naval history, we strongly feel that another USS Coontz deserves to sail the seas and serve the United States of America.
