Dear Sir,
Sundatta High School (English) is a small school located in Tardeo area of South Mumbai. Our school has been associated with some organizations working in the field of environment conservation and creating awareness about the same.
Our students of Std. IX undertook a project to study the growing problem of mangroves depletion and their impact on our environment.
Their findings show that the present day Mumbai was made of 7 different islands which were reclaimed over a period of 3 centuries. Mumbai, basically an island lies on a seismologically active zone.
All these 3 factors make Mumbai vulnerable to the adverse effects of the erosional work of sea waves.Mangrove act as a natural buffer between the land and the sea and protect the land from the erosional work of the sea.
Mumbai has lost about 40 \% of its mangrove cover to construction , development, housing and dumping grounds in the past 20 years.
The 26/7 incident is not just a sporadic event but an indicator of a series of catastrophes probable in future if something is not urgently done to save the mangroves on a war footing.
We are convinced that public opinion and pressure alone can help to initiate a favourable change.
We therefore appeal you to support our petition Save Mangroves- Save Mumbai
