We, the undersigned, are concerned about Miami-Dade Countys municipal water source, the Biscayne Aquifer. We are using so much water that salt water is intruding into this freshwater aquifer on which we rely for our water. One solution to this is to problem is to re-use water, commonly known as gray water, from household sources, such as washing machines, air conditioners, etc. The water would be treated on-site and then used in irrigation systems. This would eliminate the need to use freshwater to irrigate lawns and other landscaping. We are proposing that gray water systems be mandatory in all newly constructed buildings, both residential and commercial. If we continue to ignore this growing problem, we will not have a freshwater source in the future.
