TRUSU wants to use $1.5 million of the student union fees we pay every semester to build meeting/study rooms and student lounges in the Independent Centre. We will lose the two thirds of the event space we have right now, which is the only space available for student events. The Independent Centre is a unique venue, the only one of its kind in all of Kamloops. Its part of the Campus ACTIVITY Centre, and should remain a multi-purpose room. University life is not only about school, but also about events and campus life. The union wants to create a meeting/lounge/study area that is already in the universitys short-term building plans. The Independent Centre will be unavailable for use until Sept. 09. Rooms that will serve the same purpose will be present in the new library; which will be completed in Sept. 2010; making this project a waste of time, money, and space.
Instead, here are other solutions:
- Rent it to the public for additional revenue
- Bring the ping pong tables and couches down everyday
- Organize more events
- Install electric curtains to separate the room as needed
No official studies or student surveys have been conducted(The Omega).
Sign this petition to tell TRUSU that you do not support this project and that they need to consult and inform the student body about their projects.
