We as students, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni of the University of Mary Washington (formerly Mary Washington College) and members of the surrounding communities are appalled at the possibility of the Mary Washington College Seals removal from its place of honor above the stage in Dodd Auditorium. This beautiful seal, which represents our schools great history and reminds us of the original college, has been threatened with removal or cover.
Not only is this a horrible desecration of the schools rich history, but it is also a waste of money, as the Seal was just recently renovated. It was cleaned, painted, and colored with gold filigree. It stands out beautifully now, but few students will be lucky enough to see it.
This underhanded waste of money and offense against our historic school unceremoniously and without warning to any of the students is shameful and a huge desecration of our school.
We therefore urge the Board of Visitors and President Anderson to remove such ideas from their agenda and keep the newly-restored piece of history intact.
