Eliminating the position of secretary of Foreign Languages would negatively affect student retention and cause loss of revenue to the university.
During the academic year 2010-2011 alone, 3000 students studied a language offered by the department (approximately 18\% of all students enrolled on the Main Campus).
The department includes 50 instructorsmore than any undergraduate program at UT other than English.
The numbers of students and faculty are too great for another departments staff to absorb with any kind of efficiency.
The study of foreign languages and cultures is essential to successful business endeavors in the 21st century.
To achieve world peace requires understanding of other cultures; no other area of study furthers that mutual comprehension and respect more than the area of languages and cultures.
Eliminating the position of secretary of Foreign Languages would hamper the departments academic mission immeasurably.
Without a secretary, no department can be viable or vibrant. Without a viable Department of Foreign Languages, the University of Toledo would be lacking in its commitment to create an environment that values and fosters diversity, and provide services that meet students' and regional needs and be a global resource and the partner of choice for education.
