On Thursday (02/24/2006) the South Dakota Senate voted 23-12 (an earlier house version passed 31-4) to approve a proposed constitutional amendment (SJR 2) that would specify that the state constitution does not recognize abortion rights. State Sen. Julie Bartling (D) and several other lawmakers sponsored the bill saying that the state constitution "shall not be construed to grant any right relating to abortion." Democratic Sen. Julie Bartling, the bill's main sponsor, said, "it is the time for the South Dakota Legislature to deal with this issue and protect the lives and rights of unborn children."

We feel betrayed by the actions of the South Dakota State legislator, Sen. Julie Bartling. As a Democrat, we feel there are a few ideals that a person ought to maintain. These are basic and universally accepted platform issues such as opposing racial segregation, supporting Americans rights to equality, and protecting a womans right to choose. I call upon the leadership of the Democrat National Committee to place pressure on Sen. Julie Bartling, her supporters, and all democrats that endorse her. We demand that the leadership of the Democrat National Committee force Sen. Julie Bartling to leave the Democrat Party, and stop identifying herself as a Democrat. She has sponsored a bill that directly attacks women and their ability to make decisions about their body. In her act of war against Roe v. Wade, she also committed an act of treason against the fundamental ideals of the party, and the party has to act to purge her from itself.
Further, we call on the leadership of the Democrat Party to identify and purge all political representatives whom take actions to restrict and repress a womans right to make choices in regards to their body.
