We, the undersigned members of the Frente Cubano-Venezolano, concerned about human rights violations in Cuba for 51 years, are asking for your help in appealing to the Department of State to intervene in such violations of human rights in Cuba. Rights that are established in The Declaration of Human Rights articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and in The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights articles 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Such violations were the response of the dictatorial regime of the Castro brothers to members of the opposition using hunger strikes as their only option as an expression of opposition to government abuses. A recent consequence of these protests was the death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo on February 23 of this year. This political leader was on hunger strike asking the liberation of 26 political prisoners who were seriously ill in Cuban jails.
After the death of Mr. Orlando Zapata Tamayo another opposition member, Mr. Guillermo Farinas, started a hunger strike for the same reason. Mr. Farinas was in a previous hunger strike in 2006 asking the regime to permit the use of the internet, which is prohibited in Cuba.
Mr. Farinas health is in critical condition. For the reasons stated we are pleading for your help.
Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.
