Students Against the Budget Cuts

On March 21st, the President of NJIT mentioned that "the twelve senior public colleges and universities" in NJ will lose 23.5 percent (not dollars) of state funding.

NJIT is a state university; the majority of the funding received is from the state budget. Many of the students that attend this institution do so because it is affordable and financial assistance is readily available. Also many of our students are first generation college students, and attending a state school is their only opportunity at receiving a college education.

So how are these budget cuts going to affect the students?

1. Tuition Increase.
2. Increase in Room and Board charges.
3. Decrease of state grants for student education.
4. Reduced Summer housing.
5. Loss in campus staffing.
6. Decrease in administrative supplies, such as paper, photocopying privileges, etc.
7. Decrease in campus center and library hours.
8. Decrease in amenities, such as air conditioning throughout the Residences halls and class rooms.
9. Possible merger of departments

Our goals are:

1) New Jersey legislature should decrease the budget cuts so we can optimize the amount of services NJIT can continue to offer

2) NJIT student population should have greater involvement in the NJIT budget process
