We believe the scheme has far reaching implications on civil liberties and is a particular risk for those with transient lifestyles such as students, with increasing costs being sought for changes of address and attendance at testing centres. We also believe that this scheme would have significant impact on international students upon arrival in the country.
Further to student issues, we believe that the biometric scheme is fundamentally against the european convention on human rights regarding the fundamental right to privacy and goes against the rule of law principles of our democracy that the state should be subservient to the people, not vice-versa and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
