Canada uses 6 million tonnes of paper and paperboard annualy. Only 1/4 of that paper and paperboard is recycled. This petition is a proposal to add a tax on paper that is made from timber. This way people are less inclined to buy unrecycled paper. Additionally this petition is to also use the tax revenue generated from this paper tax in order to subsidize the use of recycled paper.
Every ton of recycles paper will save 17 trees leading to a better environement. Manufacturing recycled paper also takes less energy than unrecycled paper.
This proposal aims to reduce the amount of unrecycled paper we use as well as encouraging the use of more recycled paper.
