PETITION TO PRESIDENT CORRIGAN FOR RECONSIDERATION OF THE DECISION TO DENY TENURE AND PROMOTION TO DR. BENITO VERGARA, JR.
Dear President Corrigan:
The undersigned are united in their request that you reconsider the decision to deny tenure and promotion to Dr. Benito Vergara, Jr. We students observed that Dr. Vergara is an excellent classroom instructor who has earned our highest respect. The very mild criticisms cited in the denial of tenure and promotion does not represent the opinion of the SFSU students who have first-hand experience with Dr. Vergaras teaching expertise.
Dr. Vergara has an outstanding record and reputation as a professor. He is also a supportive and encouraging academic advisor to all his students. We wish to see him continue serving in the Asian American Studies and Anthropology departments. The loss of his very productive presence would be a great injury to San Francisco State University and the communities that it serves.
We stand in support of the University Promotions Committees decision in favor of his promotion to Associate Professor and are committed in our firm belief that he deserves tenure at San Francisco State University.
