Representing many of the loyal fans of Darren Aronofskys masterpiece, The Fountain, we agree that this monumental film deserves much better treatment that the home release currently is receiving. We have been expecting announcements regarding the DVD release of The Fountain for several months. A strange amount of time elapsed before there was any news. Finally, on March 9, 2007, there was an announcement. We were eager to find out when it would be released, as some us who are fans of Aronofsky had been waiting since they first heard of the film in early 2002! Five years have passed, and finally being released for home entertainment! Many films that were released in theatres at the time The Fountain was have already been released on DVD or soon will be. But The Fountain was to be released in the middle of May 2007, a much later release date than other November-released films. But now after all the waiting, all the speculation on whether Criterion would release this or not, what is the treatment the DVD receives? A single-disc release with one bonus feature? Such a wondrous film that gives so much should not receive such minimal content. The Fountain appeals to a select audience, thus resulting in its smaller film gross, but those that are fans of it are extremely passionate about it. A limited collectors edition would certainly be ideal, as only a lesser number would have to be produced, for example. Whats more, The Fountain had a wonderful theatrical poster, but the cover created for the home release? Instead of capturing the true atmosphere of the film with the original gold-toned poster, the collage that is presented makes the film appear entirely different. This cover does not feel like The Fountain, and it sends out a completely wrong message! Many fans have waited for half a decade for The Fountain to finally be released. And eagerly anticipating the home release of this wonderful film, we fans were shocked to learn of its inferior cover art, and lack of special content. The Fountain is one film that truly deserves a special edition, and it is saddening to see such a beautiful film ignored when there is so much to be said about it. We hope you consider another edition of The Fountain with more appropriate artwork and more suitable bonus features for the true enthusiast.
Thank you for your time,
