We the undersigned are extremely concerned about the level of homophobia being faced by University of Wollongong gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students on campus. Such incidences of this homophobia include constant verbal and physical harassment from other students to the point of receiving death threats in the designated 'safe space', and having their property and posters destroyed or defaced with such phrases as 'die fags'.
We are also extremely concerned about the University's lack of action on these issues - in particular the failure of security to respond to student's requests for assistance in a timely matter, and the refusal of University administration to act quickly to find a new safe space. Additionally by not addressing the attitudes and behaviour present in some of its students, the University of Wollongong is appearing to condone such blatant homophobia and intolerance.
In view of the aforementined, we the undersigned are in full support of the actions of the queer students at University of Wollongong and urge university administration to address the issues raised by these students as a matter of urgency.

As long as university authorities choose to ignore or trivialise homophobic violence, they send a message to the student population that such violence is acceptable. Strong leadership is needed to increase safety on campus and change violent attitudes.
