Right now in Australia, there are around 11 million hens confined in battery cages.
- Each hen is given a 'living' space smaller than the size of one A4 sheet of paper.
- Hens are painfully debeaked
- Many suffer severe 'defeathering' from rubbing painfully against their wire enclosures
- 1 in 6 hens inside battery cages live with broken bones
- Hens only live 18 months, a tiny fraction of their natural life of up to 12 years
- 11 million unwanted male chicks are discarded, gassed, or ground up alive
- 1 egg = 30 hours of pain and suffering
The EU will ban the use of all battery operations by 2012. Australia refuses to make such changes, so it is up to you to vote with your dollar. Please dont buy battery eggs, buy more humane alternatives such as free range.
