Dear Mr Ahern,
The following is written in and to be understood in plain and common English. I, Ashley, and the signature of those contained herein after are free beings on the land known as Йire; being of sound body and mind we write you this letter to notify you that we do not consent to the implementation of the new Defamation Act 2009 which has come into effect on the 1st day of January 2010 on the grounds that it violates the basic fundamental and inalienable right to freedom of expression as outlined by the Irish Constitution under Article 40, the Charter of Fundamental Right of the EU under Article 11 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights under Article 19.
How can blasphemy be considered to be against the Law when we have seen so much abuse that has been exposed within the Catholic Church? Is it not the right of the People to be made aware of such issues, uncensored so as to have the ability to decide for themselves?
This Act has been given the force of Law without the consent of the Irish People. No referendum was put to the public. When the Minister was questioned on this he reasons stated were that a referendum was unwarranted and costly. How can the opinion of the People be considered to be unwarranted when the very Act in question aims to remove the God given right that gives us our voice and opinions as a Nation? As for the referendum being costly, the Government had no problem when a referendum was put to the People on Lisbon 2 on the 2nd of October. An opinion which had been put to the People, and rejected only a year earlier. It appears that the Government will only inject funds into referendums it believes that will benefit itself and not that of the very People who entrust it with their livelihoods and give it the power to enact as Government. The Government appears to be acting Un-Constitutionally. Not only did the Government reject the opinions of the Irish People in regards to Lisbon 2008, it now appears to not consider the opinions of the same People when bringing legislation like the Defamation Act 2009 into action.
We the People demand that our voice be heard.
