The current period in American University is an opportunity to examine the direction in which we would like our institution to move in the future. We, the undersigned, feel American University should teach its students, community and nation how to use the planets resources judiciously and how to foster social equity. We have seen that the universities that have taken the largest strides towards campus sustainability are those that have dedicated leadership. Therefore, we ask you to make commitment to sustainability a major criterion in the evaluation of potential candidates for President. Specifically, we want a president who will:
1) Sign the Talloires Declaration of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future,
2) Set the planned School of International Service building as the standard, not the exception, for all campus facility construction and renovation,
3) Commit to decreasing the Universitys ecological footprint, especially with regards to waste streams and climate change,
4) Make sustainability education mandatory for all University programs,
5) Incorporate social justice concerns into all University policies and procedures.
Please ensure that our community will have a leader committed to sustainability.
