We, the members of EverQuest Live Message Forums, feel the rating system is detrimental to the health of the forums, and should be removed or restricted.
The rating system, dispite it's intent, is being used to cause grief to others. Certain unknown individuals have been using low ratings indiscriminantly on all of one person's post in order to lower them to a rank where their abilities as a poster are limited beyond what they should be. Many people have become targets for said individuals.
As it currently is, a poster's average rating is tied directly to their rank on the boards. Rank holds privlidges such as edit, avatar, signature, html, and tables. These useful tools and special privlidges can be removed by one or two persistant people. We feel this is to much power to place in the hands of the common poster, and the abuse of the system has proved us right.
A number of solutions have been suggested over the life of the boards, I will list some of them here.
A) The removal of the rating system. This completely removes all possibility of the rating system being used as a "Griefing" tool.
B) The seperation of rating and rank. By making the rating have no impact on a person's rank, and hense their abilities, the rating system could not be used to detriment other posters. At the same time, it still exists for it's intended purpose of rating post quality. With the ability to directly effect others' posting abilities removed, we also feel the rating system will become more reliable, as people will be less likely to waste their time to one star all of an individuals posts if it has no effect on that individual.
C) Moderator only rating. Making it so only moderators can rate posts would remove the problem. We trust moderators are not the ones abusing the system.
D) Defender/Philosopher+ only rating. This, however, may be just a transfer in power, and not a solution. However, in reducing the amount of people who can rate, you reduce the potential for abuse.
These are our suggestions for a fix, but regardless of how it is approached, we are all in agreement that it needs evaluated and changed.
