Honor the Memory of Songwriter Elliott Smith

Whereas, Elliott Smith, an Academy Award nominee for best song, was atremendous influence on thousands of talented and notable musicians,both nationallyand internationally;

Whereas, Elliott Smith contributed back to the community through hismanycharitable works, including his participation in numerous benefitconcerts, hispolicy of keeping ticket prices low so as to allow all his fans toenjoy hismusic, and his efforts to benefit abused children;

Whereas Elliott Smith endeared himself to his fans and supportersthrough hismodesty, passion and honesty, writing songs that touched the hearts andsoulsof those who heard them;

Whereas, it is appropriate and fitting that his name be forevermemorializedso that future generations will learn of his exceptional musicalinfluence,generosity, and strength in the face of enormous obstacles; therefore,

We the undersigned hereby petition the Mayor of Los Angeles and allmembersof the Los Angeles City Council to honor the memory of Elliott Smith byway ofthe following:

1. Renaming and the setting aside of a section of Echo Park in hishonor,with appropriate funding to maintain and develop said section toproperlymemorialize and pay tribute to him.
2. Renaming a thoroughfare in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles inhishonor, with funding sufficient to create appropriate signage changes,whereneeded.
3. Any other fitting tributes to his name, where appropriate.
