Human Rights for all Athletes

On paper the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has claimed that transitioned athletes may compete in the Olympic Games. However, the Canadian Cycling Association has engaged in blatant discrimination against one of Canada's best athletes, cyclist Kristen Worley, due to her status as a transitioned woman. Please read this open letter by Kristen Worley to the director of Sport Canada, Mr. Gilles Dйry, to see how he is perpetuating the discrimination against Kristen Worley and how the CCA has violated her human rights which could have a chilling effect on diversity in sport.

We the undersigned have read the open letter by Kristen Worley to Mr. Dйry, head of Sport Canada. We are aware that he has refused to take measures to stop the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) from prohibiting Kristen from competing in the Beijing Olympics. We also believe that Kristen Worley, an elite athlete, has not received a fair response from the CCA to her inquiries about alternatives to qualifying meet attendance as a result of the extenuating circumstances surrounding her father's bone cancer and recent death. We see this as blatant discrimination, a violation of her human rights and a setback for diversity in sport because she is not being treated equally. We respectfully request that the CCA re-evaluate Kristen's request, who had been assured that she would have opportunities to attend other events for qualification purposes as a result of these extenuating circumstances, and we request that the CCA find just cause to reinstate her so as to enable her to compete in the Beijing Olympics.

93. Stephanie B | I cannot believe this, as it clearly goes against the international olympic committee's acceptance of transsexual and intersex people, I hope the Canadian Cycling Association change their policy and allow Kristen to compete.
