This is a petition to support Zarko Trajanoski, a Macedonian human rights activist, accused for insulting the pro-government media personality Milenko Nedelkovski by qualifying Nedelkovski's calls to "execute the traitors of the nation" as hate speech and intimidation of the public.
We demand that Macedonian authorities drop the charges against Zarko Trajanoski immediately as the existence of this process resembles an embarrassment for the country's judicial system and a detrimental attack on human rights and liberties.
Not only these allegations contradict the common sense, but they also resemble a form of oppression against one of the most vocal critics of the current regime. By legitimizing the accusations that denouncing someone's calls for physical execution of the so called "traitors" can be considered as an insult, one legitimizes direct form of political pressure and in this case, a potential fine of 50.000 euros for the defendant if found guilty, which is an amount more than 150 higher than the average monthly salary in the country. The most disappointing notion is that the charges are pressed by the person who publicly called for executions of traitors himself.
We strongly believe that this case has a strong political background and if proceeded, can be a potential point of no return for Macedonian justice system. Therefore we urge the Primary Court 1 in Skopje (where the charges have been submitted), to dismiss the allegations immediately.
