Please Don't Pretend Season Five Never Happened

It was frustrating to see him the entire season not taking responsibility for anything and placing all the blame for the mess his life had become on Peyton. He lead her on up to the point she kissed him, yelled at her, accused her of only wanting him back when he was happy with someone else, said she never believed he could have his book published, kissed her back and proposed to his girlfriend minutes later. He reacted to her tears coldly, ignored her pain and literally ignored her existence in the post-strike episodes as he fought to get his ex back until the very same day he had one of his famous epiphanies and decided to propose to her again. Not to mention of course he broke her heart even more saying he hated her.
Their reunion was beautiful but were still waiting for an acknowledgement on his part that his treatment of her was unfair and he knows how much it hurt her and deeply regrets it. Thats what weve been waiting for since the first half of season five, some of us even more than their reunion but as the season progressed, not only it never happened but he managed to hurt her more. Honestly, for that, many hardcore LP fans stopped supporting them, many of them cant even understand Lucas character anymore or even Peyton for allowing him to mistreat her without standing up for herself. Another part of us cant feel emotionally attached to them anymore, or at least not as nearly as much as it used to be. Even those still completely in love with the couple cant quite appreciate their portrayal last season.
So we are wondering whether Lucas will ever acknowledge his past mistakes and apologize, or things are just going to be swept under the rug and never brought up again. We really think its important that he somehow shows he cares about her feelings, and he does take responsibility for things. We realize by now the show must have scripts ready for probably more than half of the season, but well without a doubt welcome this kind of scene whenever it comes.
We ask this as Lucas fans, considering his character is damaged to some degree in our eyes and needs some sort of redemption. And we know hes all sweet and happy now, but it still doesnt change our perception of him as guy that cant take no for an answer and reacts very bad when things dont go the way he wants. That was his portrayal last season and the show still hasnt given us any reason to believe this is changed now.
We ask this as Peyton fans, as we love she can be so forgiving but we really dont like that shes ready to take the worlds misery upon her shoulders. She accepted being accused by Haley of trying to take away his happiness, she accepted being blamed by him for the end of their relationship along with the mess that was his life at the moment, she felt extremely guilty about it and by doing so we feel like she doesn't value her equality in their relationship .
We ask this as Lucas and Peyton fans as a couple, since their relationship feels a little unbalanced now considering while she was willing to profess her love and wait for him forever, no matter how many times he rejected her and chose his current girlfriend over her, he on the other hand could only acknowledge his feelings after she provided him proof of her love. An apology, we believe, would be the first step to convey he knows he messed it up a lot too, and from now long hell try to do better.
Last but not least, we ask this as fans of the show, as we feel the message transmitted so far was that in Lucas words When a man asks you to marry you, you say yes. Thats how you get always. Sometimes it feels like Peyton spent the entire season being punished for not being ready for marriage at the age of nineteen and when her character was finally redeemed, then Lucas was finally ready to give her a seconc chance. Its a frustrating message and we refuse to believe thats what the show is trying to tell us. But it doesnt help that weve never seen Lucas regret anything while we saw her(along with other characters) blaming herself for things she wasnt even supposed to be blamed in the first place.
We hope Mark Schwahn along with all people involved in the creating process of the show know if we take the time to make this letter and if we care so much about these characters, we give you people all credit for that. So thank you for the show and thank you in advance for reading this.
