The proposed fare and service changes will greatly affect the daily lives of all Allegheny County citizens, especially college students commuting to work and/or school. As members of the University of Pittsburgh Commuter Student Association and Duquesne University Commuter Council we are proponents of a strong public transportation system, and we strongly encourage those responsible to find another solution. Many students do not own cars and have tuition and fees for school to worry about. A reduction in service by 150 buses would pose serious problems for them. By cutting service and increasing fares, fewer students will have access to public transportation yet have to pay more for it. This decision will lead to an overall decrease in riders and therefore a decrease in the amount of fares paid. It is a quick fix for a problem that needs a long term solution. We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to prevent proposed fare and service changes affecting the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
