The purpose of this petition is to address our concerns with the Protect Act and mandatory minimum sentencing. This Act states that its key objectives are fairness and consistency; however, the same sentence for varying criminal acts is hardly fair. Mandatory minimum laws are in desperate need of reformation. We propose that judges be provided with the discretion to determine different sentences for different cases. Also, the mandatory minimum sentence should be lower for non violent or first time offenders. If you agree that the Protect Act and mandatory minimum laws are in need of revision, please sign our petition. Lots of things should be taken in consideration before sentencing...including: The criminal background, mental capacity, disabilities, and severity of the crime. The sentence should not be this harsh for a first time offender.
