Pune is a threatened city with a rapidly growing population, vehicles and huge new areas passing into a concrete jungle. The hills of Pune are the last bastions to preserve the health of the city and its occupants. A large agitation with 80000 signatures had prevailed upon the Pune Municipal Corporation to stop construction on Pune's hills - on the newly amalgamated 23 villages some years back. The Pune Municipal Corporation has recently reversed this decision and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra has endorsed 4% construction on the hills. This benefits only the handful of speculator land owners who bought the hills and pushed for permission to build on them. The hills are the bequest of the citizens of Pune to their future generations. Congestion and overpopulation are killing this city. We have to come together and raise our voice against a mindless concretisation of the city's remaining green spaces and hill tops/hill slopes. Let us all join hands and object to this move that encourages environmental degradation of Pune. Let short term and short sighted policies and narrow interests not take precedence over the long term health of the city and its inhabitants.
