St Augustine’s is a special school for 160 special boys and girls with learning difficulties from Louth to Wicklow and all parts of Dublin.
Our children benefit from this centre of excellence because teachers, SNA’a, healthcare professionals and vocational teachers work together to deliver a great curriculum which prepares them for independent living later in life.
This model for success has been created by three agencies – Department of Education, the HSE and the St John of God working in tandem for many years.
However, a decision taken by St John of God Services to terminate its support for residential and vocational services with effect from this summer has put our children’s future at risk.
The decision was taken unilaterally, without consultation and communicated insensitively.
Instead of celebrating, preserving and developing this crucial service for our children, it is being destroyed!
The parents of the children of St Augustine’s have come together and are determined to fight to defend this opportunity for very special children to reach their potential. We believe that we and St John of God Services should and must work together to resolve this threat in a mutually beneficial way for the good of our children and the Order.
The first step in that process is for the Order to rescind its decision to end services this summer and to engage with us in finding a solution which protects the great work carried out in St Augustine’s.
