Tim Burton's upcoming adaptation of Alice In Wonderland (supposed) to be be hitting theaters worldwide on March 5. But unfortunately, it might NOT be released everywhere. Many fans who have been waiting months, or even years, for this films release may not get the opportunity to see it in theaters.
Here's why: Disney wants to push the release date of the DVD up, three months after the theatrical release, as opposed to the usual minimum of four.
This has offended cinemas across the world, who are unhappy that they would be forced to remove the film from their theaters early, and lose profits.
So theaters across Europe and other areas are planning to boycott the film. Their reasoning is that they don't want this to set a new precedent in the movie industry, if Disney and other studios begin pulling movies from theaters early then the cinemas will lose profits.
Disney's motivation (apart from money) is to combat piracy. Rushing DVD releases leaves less time for pirates to get their hands on the movie.
I take the theaters side in this argument.
If Disney wants to start doing this with their movies, it was not a good idea to start with a movie that is as hotly anticipated as Alice In Wonderland.
What Disney could do is make a deal in the countries that are planning to protest the movie, let them hold the film in theaters for the normal amount of time, and push their DVD release back, let them take the hit with a late home video release.
If an agreement isn't made then both parties will take a MAJOR hit in profits, nobody will be happy.
Least of all the fans. Alice In Wonderland is Disney's most anticipated movie since Toy Story. The film has a wider range of appeal than any Disney movie since Fantasia. Millions of fans will be livid if they have to sit at home on March 5 and wonder what they're missing.
Please Disney, come to your senses!
