(1) gender, race and social justice studies at the university,
(2) the reappointment of Prof. Elizabeth L. Sweet to the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
Dr. Elizabeth L. Sweet, a Native American woman faculty member, has dedicated her career to addressing systemic inequality and injustice through her interdisciplinary pedagogy, mentorship to students collaborations with organizations on campus, in Chicago and abroad. She has demonstrated exemplary commitment to cross cultural investigation of gender, race, ethnicity and class in processes of community development as stated in the mission statement of the concentration on Community Development for Social Justice of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
We firmly believe that the decision to not retain Prof. Sweet debilitates an already weakened department. We, UIUC Students for Gender, Race and Social Justice Interdisciplinary Studies, request:
a) clarification regarding the decision making process,
b) a plan for recruiting and retaining underrepresented faculty,
c) the departments vision regarding the future of the concentration in community development for social justice, and how the department will accommodate current and incoming students in this field of study and
d) willingness on behalf of the department and the university administration to engage in a dialogue with students about the future of studies on gender, race and social justice at the university.
