A Call for Irish Medical Education Reform

Irish medical students are hard working individuals that are ultimately training to become the physicians of tomorrow. To do this, they need to be surrounded by an environment that is conductive of learning and allows them to develop their clinical skills.
Currently Irish medical students are seen as a compulsory addition to the clinical team, with no real or defined role. If they all disappeared tomorrow, chances are they wouldn’t be missed.
This method of clinical teaching contradicts a vast array of research that shows that being responsible for a single aspect of patient care is a powerful stimulus for learning. These responsibilities do not have to large, but they need to exist! These roles and responsibilities are well defined in countries such as France, United States and Canada. It is time that Ireland beings to move forward and adapts its medical education to the 21st century.
In summary, the development of explicit medical student roles and responsibilities will further promote a higher level of medical education and improve the student experience.
