"Anti-Judaism", "Anti-Semitism", and the Anti-Defamation League

"Semites are peoples who speak Semitic languages; the group includes Arabs, Aramaeans, Jews, and many Ethiopians. In a Biblical sense, Semites are peoples whose ancestry can be traced back to Shem, Noah's eldest son. The ancient Semitic populations were pastoral Nomads who several centuries before the Christian Era were migrating in large numbers from Arabia to Mesopotamia, the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, and the Nile River delta. Jews and other Semites settled in villages in Judea, southern Palestine."

"Anti-Semitic" and "anti-Semitism" are not only misnomers. Their use is unfair to all Semites, Jewish or not Jewish, who are all part of the same ethnic group but are of different cultures and speak different languages. We demand that the Anti-Defamation League, as an institution advocating tolerance, rectify this misdeed and adhere to their mission statement:
"The immediate object of the League is to stop, by appeals to reason and conscience and, if necessary, by appeals to law, the defamation of the Jewish people. Its ultimate purpose is to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens."

While using more accurate terms than "anti-Semitic" and "anti-Semitism" would not stop anti-Jewish defamation, it is a step towards furthering public education about the continuing legacy of bigotry and hatred aimed towards all Jews.
