Boyce College Bandwidth Petition

Students, alumni, prospective students, and friends of Boyce College:

We, the undersigned, agree and adhere to the following stance, and we ask James P. Boyce College administration to hear our plea.

Internet speeds and availability have increased over the years. It has come to my attention that all of the male Boyce dormitories are on one line in regards to internet connection speed. The ladies dormitories are also on a separate line. Due to the fact that there are far more males than females living on campus, this appears to provide the males of Boyce College with a disadvantage. There are many times during the day that male students cannot even connect to the sbts.edu webpage due to extremely low badwidth.

Additionally, when connecting to other Boyce College students via the on campus and between campus networks, students (most of whose computers now come standard with 100 Megabit per second Network Interface Cards) connect at 10Mbps.

While I believe strongly that abuse of these bandwidth limits should be taken seriously, we feel that Boyce College should increase the bandwidth allotment for the male dormitories, and that the dorm connections should be unlocked to their full potential of 100Mbps.

Illegal file sharers are likely to use up to 10GB in one week of both up and downstream bandwidth, however some people do have legitimate uses for bandwidth. Some college students spend their time taking part in beta tests of new software, from operating systems to video games. Some beta-testing groups find it easier to have their testers distribute the product to other testers, rather than having one source for all downloads this would mean you may download 1 GB and be asked to upload 3GB worth of this same download, in order to spread it around and get testing done sooner.

This position rises from a technological point of view, from multiple students who know that Boyce College is one of the most advanced undergraduate theological schools in the world. With proper switches in place, the small increase to bandwidth of students will not affect the schools day-to-day business and the administrations need for bandwidth.

I urge you all to place your name (first only, will be fine, but please no "internet nick-names"), as we petition to have Boyce College raise our bandwidth limits, and allow students to be able to accomplish the work that needs done, not penalized so severely they cannot complete Internet-based homework assignments or check their e-mail.

With utmost respect:
