Dear Sir:
We have learned last week that Republican Senators are gearing up to boycott the Summer Olympic Games of 2008 to be held in Beijing, P.R. China, which is not only a powerful neighbor of Burma, but also possesses a suspicious human right records of violations and notorious reputations of dealing with dictatorships around the world.
Since February and June this year, we have denounced the Chinese foreign policy practices on Burmas issues. We staged protests in front of Chinese Consulate in Chicago and Embassy in Washington, DC for the veto power abuse by the Chinese delegation at the United Nations Security Council meeting on Jan 12, 2007. Recently, a growing concern has been shared among Burmese pro-democracy activists for increasing Chinese involvement in Burmese affairs. For instance, Chinese intelligence officers with an interpreter paid a clandestine visit to the Headquarters of the United Wa Solidarity Army, an armed resistance group, in Pang Seng, adjacent to Yunnan Province of China, on April 4, and 26 of this year. On June 5,2007, Lt. Gen. Thein Sein of ruling military dictatorship flew to Beijing for talks with Chinese leadership.
We would therefore like to take a foreign policy initiative by joining with the boycott against Chinese Olympics by the U.S. legislators in order to steer Chinese involvement in Burma to a positive direction in line with the US, EU, ASEAN and UN efforts to restore freedom and democracy in Burma as soon as possible.
We do earnestly anticipate aforesaid public event under the joint sponsorship of U.S. legislators and Burmese pro-democracy expatriates from various states within the U.S. and other countries. If possible or agreeable by your Honor, we would prefer Sept. 18 or roundabout of this year. However, the extent and date, place of event would be up to your honors decision and convenience.
