For almost 70 years, the name "Canaries" has been widely associated with baseball in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. From 1942 until 1953, the original Canaries played in the original Northern League. This tradition was revived with the new Canaries of the Northern League (and later the American Association) formed in 1993. It was a simple name that caught on well with the fans, prompting them to cheer them on to the 2008 American Association pennant! Now all this tradition, all this legacy...
...has gone down the drain with the new owners.
Feeling the need to cater to total idiots who don't understand baseball heritage, Gary Weckwerth and his cronies have renamed them the "Fighting PHEASANTS"...after a team in ABERDEEN?! This was done with NO fan input whatsoever, and the owners are disregarding all input.
We insist that as soon as possible, the owners listen to us fans and change the name back-or at LEAST hold a vote after the season asking which name the fans prefer. It's time they recognized the fans in Sioux Falls, and until they do, we will boycott all Pheasants and Stampede hockey (they own that team too) games!

This team has so much history. Like most baseball teams it's filled with good and bad but it is still history. I agree the pheasants have a history too, but that is Aberdeens history not the city of Sioux Falls.

If baseball is about anything, it is tradition. Naming the team the Pheasants clearly says that you care nothing about Sioux Falls or the Canaries fans.
