Petition to The Honourable Robert Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada   We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw attention of the Department of Justice  to the following:   THE PURPOSE OF BRUTUS'S LAW: An online efforts to change the following law, so that land owners must take some responsibility when shooting, hurting or killing a dog that has wandered onto their property. Please refer to Part 1-2 C below. According to the law as it sits now in Canada, land and livestock owners can shoot ANY dog for entering their property, no questions asked. Many times, as in the case of Brutus, a treasured family dog is being killed unnecessarily because it crossed the property line. In most cases the dog owner is never notified of the killing of their dog and in turn there is a backlash of a lot of grief and unanswered questions. This is what Brutus's law is about. Not to stop a landowner for shooting a dog which is clearly a threat to their livestock, but rather to put in a procedure in which:    1. A valid attempt to contact and inform the dog's owner must be made by the landowner if at that time the dog is present but is clearly not a threat to livestock at that time.   2. Any killing of a dog that stray onto a landowners property must be reported to proper agencies so dog owners can be properly notified of their loss.   3. Deceased dog is not to be disposed of until a valid effort has been made to return deceased dog to owners.   PART I PROTECTION OF LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY ACT When dogs may be killed 2. Any person may kill a dog, (a) that is found killing or injuring livestock or poultry; (b) Repealed: 2002, c. 17, Sched. F, Table. (c) that is found straying at any time, and not under proper control, upon premises where livestock or poultry are habitually kept. R.S.O. 1990, c. L.24, s. 2; 2002, c. 17, Sched. F, Table
