We will continue to wish others a Merry Christmas in the spirit of goodwill. Conversely we will not be offended if we are in turned wished a Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, or any of the other greetings associated with festivals celebrated by other cultures in a similar spirit of goodwill. Similarly we will continue to take part in festivals pertaining to our respective faiths and invite others to do the same without fear of insult or harm.
Similarly, we believe Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, and Father Christmas, in all his names and incarnations, to say Ho Ho Ho as a form of laughter, not a form of insult.
We believe words containing the word "man" can relate to both men and women in the description of items. For example, we believe entrances to certain underground utilities to be called "manholes", but can be used by both men and women.
We believe the use of colour in every day speech is not necessarily a racist connotation. For example we will continue to drink our black tea and black coffee by not adding milk to it.
We believe our children are intelligent enough to, among other things:
- realise cartoon violence belongs in cartoons and certain comedy acts (such as The Three Stooges), and that while they shouldn't be used in real life, they can be enjoyed when presented as fiction.
- accept defeat in competition, and responsibility for their actions
- enjoy nursery rhymes such as "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "Humpty Dumpty" without any underlying connotations, whether real but lost over time, or imagined.
- enjoy stories such as "The Three Little Pigs" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" without malice towards others (for example Muslims or sufferers of dwarfism)
- learn from early childrens programming, including Sesame Street, despite warnings that episodes of these shows are now not deemed suitable for children.
In the spirit of these beliefs, we denounce the use of slurs relating to race, religion, sexual preference or gender. We believe words used solely for this purpose have no place in everyday language and should, rightly, be contested.
