With the awareness on Global Warming on the rise, what with Al Gores documentary, An Inconvenient Truth and the Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) winning the Nobel Prize, one wonders, what is Chennai doing about it? It is in answer to this question that we propose Chennai, Lights Out! or Chennai, Vilakkai Annai! on May 1st 2008. A one hour public display of unison where the citizens of Chennai switch off their lights from 7 pm to 8 pm in support of the fight against Global Warming.
On May 1st , when the people of Chennai switch off their lights, not only would the sheer numbers involved save a significant amount of energy, but the effect on the Chennai mindset would be invaluable. In darkness does light shine brightest, similarly, this one hour of darkness would bring to light the urgent need to conserve energy far more effectively than lecturing on the subject.
This petition is a pledge that you will switch off your lights, fans, air-conditioners and other electrical appliances for one hour from 7 pm to 8 pm. By signing this petition you will become an ambassador for the cause. Together with your support we can achieve this as well as finally give energy conservation and global warming the attention it deserves.
The effort does not end on May 1st. Take a resolution to introduce new habits into your daily routine like segregating your waste, taking a cloth bag when you go shopping, switching off the electrical appliances when you finish using them and many others. These habits will go a long way in helping to reduce energy wastage, garbage accumulation thereby reducing the threat of Global Warming.
