The "miracle" of the miracle berry is that it causes sour foods to taste sweet. This has enormous implications for food manufacture, as it would allow the creation of sweet tasting foods without the need for sugar or artificial sweeteners. Given the problems caused in America today due to the overuse of high fructose corn syrup and the ever increasing prevalence of diabetes, we need the miracle berry's powers now more than ever.
However, the miracle berry's natural properties have been stifled due to the actions of the Food and Drug Administration. In 1974, on the eve prior to the launch of innovative food products for diabetics, the FDA unilaterally banned the sale of miracle berry as a food additive. This resulted in the bankruptcy of the Miralin Company, which was working on commercializing the miracle berry. The FDA's internal decision process has remained opaque for almost 40 years now. All Freedom of Information Act requests have been replied to with the majority of text redacted. "Big Sugar" remains firmly in control.
As signatories of this petition, we request a review of the FDA's decision, as well as the complete text of all internal documents relating to the miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) and its active compound, Miraculin.
