Genocide of Uganda

The people of northern Uganda are asking for international help to end the long and brutal war that has devastated their communities and threatened the lives of their children. Fearing abduction by the Lords Resistance Army, thousands of these children - known as "night commuters"- are forced to travel for hours each evening to sleep in Gulu and other towns. Hundreds of thousands of other children and their families live in squalid conditions in camps, having been chased from their land by the conflict.

We would like to see our government take stronger actions to support the current peace negotiations in Uganda and to address the humanitarian needs of children, families, and communities in northern Uganda. Canada can help by taking action to:

- Encourage the government of Uganda to seriously engage in peace talks;
- Encourage the government of Sudan to stop supporting the rebels;
- Provide assistance to the peace negotiator, Betty Bigome, and give her international support;
- Advocate for stronger UN role in northern Uganda to protect children and support local people working for peace;
- Plan now and offer help to rehabilitate children affected by this war;
- Increase Canadas humanitarian assistance for the night commuters and other displaced people.

Thank you for giving this your consideration. We look forward to hearing that Canada has increased its support for peace in northern Uganda.
