An Open Letter to President George W. Bush

President George W. Bush

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Ave

Washington D.C.

January 17, 2007

Dear Mr. President,

During your address to the nation of January 10, 2007, when you announced yet another troop surge in Iraq, you told the country that the year ahead will demand more patience, sacrifice and resolve. I agree Mr. Bush. The continued occupation of Iraq and the Global War on Terror will, indeed demand further sacrifice.

Much has already been sacrificed to support your failed policies and mission in Iraq. You have asked Americans to sacrifice their lives, their security and their civil liberties under the guise of fighting the War on Terror.

You had the support of your Congress, your Allies and the American people after September 11th, but you squandered it with hubris, willful negligence and reckless disregard for life and truth.

While the veracity of your arguments to support the invasion of Iraq is a matter still open for considerable debate, and while I duly recognize that regardless of how America found herself in that war to begin with, the fact remains that you are there and as the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan has devolved into a morass of formidable proportions, it cannot and will not easily be resolved.

You were quoted in 1999 as saying One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a Commander-In-Chief. and My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.If I have a chance to invade, if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I'm going to have a successful presidency."

While Vice President Dick Cheney was Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee under President Regean, he was quoted as saying the following "Start a small war. Pick a country where there is justification you can jump on, go ahead and invade."

Given these sentiments, and due to your recent delivery of not-so-thinly-veiled threats against Iran and Syria we have significant cause to be concerned.

So let me respectfully submit the following for your consideration:

Continuing to make the same disastrous choices over and over again and expecting to get different results is the very definition of lunacy.

You cannot and must not keep starting wars until you find one that you can win.

It is too late to distract us or redeem yourself and your presidential legacy through war,

(Im sorry. - I know you had your heart set on it)

.but there is another way.

Mr. Bush, the single noblest gesture you could make as a president and a patriot, would be to resign your office and leave the White House immediately with your Vice President in tow. Your graceful exit from office would provide an urgently needed opportunity for the corrective action needed to right your many wrongs.

You have shown yourself to be, at best unable, or at worst, unwilling to hear the voices of your people, your Generals and the world.

You Sir, clearly, do not play well with others and its time for you to leave the sandbox. Take your buddies take your balls and go home.

Its time for you to concede your personal failure as President and acquiesce the office to others more experienced than yourself.

Frankly Sir, while you brazenly demand that thousands of Americas sons and daughters make the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, this small gesture is the very least you could do.

You are a steward, in fact, you are the steward of democracy. You have sullied that solemn office by invoking a stubborn agenda that contravenes and undermines the very foundations your country is built on. Through your flagrant disregard for the rule of law, you have managed to do the undoable you have alienated the inalienable rights of your people.

Your nation deserves better than that sir. - They deserve better than you.

Resign your office and history will laud you as a man of character, you will be celebrated as a hero who fell on his sword in a single selfless act of bravery.

(Besides, as far as I know, they cant impeach you after-the-fact.)

How could your patriotism demand any less of you?

In closing, I offer these thoughts for your careful consideration

There are times when the most spectacular expression of our power is reflected

in the actions not taken in what we choose not to do.

There are times when our strength is most fiercely evident in our ability to exercise restraint.

There are times when true leadership is reflected in how we serve our fellow man

and not in how we dominate him.

And there are times when our true greatness and strength of character are evident

through our humility and not our pride.

Sometimes Mr. President, we must do the right thing because its right

and not because its easy.

In these moments we are afforded the opportunity to truly redeem and redefine ourselves.

In these moments, a single right choice can obscure years of wrong ones.

It is here, in these moments that men can become heroes.

Sincerely,

Jules Carlysle.

Mr. President,

The war in Iraq and the fight in Afghanistan have assumed disastrous proportions.

Whether it is through well-intentioned errors in judgment or bad intelligence - or intentional malfeasance it is, at the moment, irrelevant. We have no confidence in your ability to lead your country responsibly.

We, the undersigned citizens of the world, implore you, Mr. President and Vice President Cheney to consider tendering your immediate resignations.
