Littering is a common and hazardous pollutant!Did you know?•Litter is often swept into storm drains and eventually ends up in local rivers and bodies of water (The University of Texas at Austin)•The Hillsborough River, a local river from which most of our drinking water comes from, is a discharge area of this pollution (University of South Florida Water Management)•Other rivers that are harmed by USF’s storm sewer discharge include “Lake Behnke on the west side of campus adjacent to Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Detention Pond 204B south of the Psychology and Communication Sciences and Disorders Building (PCD), [and] Detention Pond 104A-1 South of Residence Betty Castor”At the University of South Florida, a wide assortment of trash and litter peppers our beautiful campus, posing a risk to wildlife and human health alike. This coming Earth Day and for the years to come, it is important that we as a student body and faculty take a stand and take responsibility for our effects on the environment, both in the local campus area and the globe around us. We kindly ask that you join the Student Environmental Association in taking responsibility for our actions with the following pledge:I pledge to take responsibility for my actions in protecting the environment by picking up at least one piece of litter every day, regardless of location or place. I also promise to reduce litter by throwing away my waste in designated containers and asking others to do the same.
