Dear Sir/Madam
We the conscientious citizens of India urge you to include Persons with Mental Illness among the list of conditions which result in disabilities, included under the National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities.
It is a well known fact that mental illnesses and disorders (such as Major Depression, Bipolar disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Alcohol Dependence and Schizophrenia) are among ten leading cause of disability worldwide. In a developing country like ours, this problem is further compounded by the lack of resources and absence of welfare policies.
We believe that absence of a mechanism to provide much-required rehabilitative help to the people suffering from mental illnesses is a major hurdle towards their full recovery and reintegration as productive members of the Indian Society.
While the efforts of the government of India to provide rehabilitative services to people suffering from Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities are laudable, we are perplexed to find out that persons suffering from mental illnesses are not included in this.
We request you to please have a fresh look at this list so that the benefits under this trust could also be extended to the millions of Indians suffering from mental illnesses and resulting disabilities.
Thanking you in anticipation
