Soon, 207 NY State after school programs offering kids free tutoring in all subjects including regents exams,and a safe environment after school will close unless Governor Elliot Spitzer adds $30,000 million to the state budget. Immediately.
"If not for the after school program I don't think I'd be graduating with a
high school diploma", said Joseph Guerrero who graduated East Side Prep H.S. in NYC at 19. The NY State Legislature made up primarily of persons who have already graduated high school and college, has allocated only 7 million of even the $30,000 needed. Although the afterschool programs knew they needed to find alternative funding soon, all 207 programs stated there was the strong assumption that one additional year of federal funding would certainly continue.

We call upon Governor Elliot Spitzer and the Legislature to allocate the $30 million dollars needed to finance these crucial programs for one more year. The cost of countless young adults made even more vulnerable to poverty, drug abuse,and illness will soon be exorbitant by comparison.
