On Thursday, August 12, 2004, Governor McGreevey resigned his post as Governor because of an extramarital affair. A homosexual extramarital affair. The courage that was required for Governor McGreevey to make this statement, to "come out" before the whole nation, is the courage that leadership requires. His ability to stare into the camera and say "My truth is that I am a gay American," is demonstrative of his ability to make proper judgments.
Our nation is currently at war with morality, fighting to limit the civil rights of our citizens, reducing homosexuals to second class citizens. Governor McGreeveys decision to relinquish his office in our current political climate is a poor choice. Holding onto his office proves that homosexuality does not make a person less of a citizen. At a time when the political climate is attempting to limit the civil rights of our citizens, we must take a stance against this discrimination. We are a nation that was founded on the notion that all men (and women) are created equal. If this is the case, love between a man and a woman should be the same as love between two people of the same gender.
Governor McGreevey, we the residents of the State of New Jersey, humble request you rethink your decision to resign. We support you fully in your decision to come out, and we continue to support you as Governor of our fair State.
