Legal Working Hours for Junior Doctors

Would you step into a taxi if you knew the driver had not slept for 36 hours? Then why would you put your life in the hands of a junior doctor who has been working continuously for the same length of time? Irish junior doctors are working illegal hours under EU law. A directive established in 2004 states that no-one should work more than 48 hours per week. However this is being severely flouted in Irish medical practice where junior doctors regularly work over seventy hours per week. It is also the norm for Irish junior doctors to work 36 hour shifts without sleep (which again contravenes the EU directive stating that workers are entitled to 11 hours rest every 24 hours). It is a disaster waiting to happen as our lives are in the hands of exhausted and underslept doctors. Yet it is a situation that the government continue to ignore. Please sign this petition if you believe that junior doctors should be entitled to adequate rest and working hours (a 48 hour week with call shifts reduced to a maximum of 24 hours). This is to safeguard the health of both patient and doctor.
